RACHEL & JACOB
needlework picture sampler
Philadelphia, PA 1772
Inscribed: 1772 Jacob Journey to Laban and Meets with Rachel Genefis 29. This incredible needlework picture worked
by an unknown young lady portrays the love story of Rachel and Jacob. The smaller figure to the right of Jacob’s
boot is most likely depicting Leah, Rachel’s older sister, who Jacob was tricked into marrying by her father. To
gain Rachel’s hand, Laban was required to work for her father for another seven years. The work is filled with
animals and symbolism and characteristic of other Biblical stories that were worked in the Philadelphia area often
on silk backgrounds.
Silk on fine linen; 16 x 21 inches sight.
