18th century American Sampler
Newport, RI c.1785
Charming 18th century Newport, RI band sampler inscribed: SARAH NICHOLS BORN APRIL 21 1776.
Sarah stitched a man and woman standing by a tree and a center hall house with some flowering motifs. She also
included alphabets, numerals, and the following verses.
Little I from vanity/ Must allways fly and This Needle Work of mine can tell/ I in my Youth Was Learned
Well/ and by my Elders also Taught/ Not to sPend my Time for Nought
Sarah must have been quite young when she worked this delightful little sampler so it was likely stitched between
1781 and 1785.
