Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Lancaster County, PA c.1820 sampler from Huber

Mary Miller
Needlework Sampler
Lancaster, PA c.1820

This charming little house sampler has never before been framed which accounts for its bold colors. The flowering vine band across the top is followed with several alphabets. Above a pink heart with flowers Mary included her name and her "dwelling place" with a classic verse found on samplers from New England to southern US, and in the UK. It begins with: Mary Miller is my name and Lancaster county is my dwelling place ------ ending with: When this you see remember me Else I shall be forgotten.

So, Mary Miller, it's 200 years after you made this beautiful sampler and it still brings joy to those who see it, which believe it or not is hundreds of thousands of people, and we are all thinking of you.

At the bottom is a prominent bright pink, three-story center-hall house depicted with a hand pump well beside the front walkway.

Silk on linen; 19 1/2" x 13 3/4" framed.

$4,800
