Sarah Ann Hewes (1815-1857) and her older brother John (1812-1887), both attended the Quaker School in Westtown,
PA. Their parents Samuel Hewes and Anna Gilpin married in 1811 and resided In Chester County.
Sarah’s maternal grandfather Gideon Gilpin was a farmer whose house became Lafayette’s headquarters during the
Battle of Brandywine. He became a tavern keeper after the Revolution and was disowned by the Concord Friends Meeting.
In 1787 he gave up tavern keeping and was taken back into the meeting with full membership.
Sarah married Joseph Pusey Edge (1807-1873) and they had five children.
