Eliza Ann Capen
Family Record Sampler
Portland, ME dated 1817
Inscribed: Wrought by Eliza. Ann Capen AEt 12/ years Portland January 4 1817
Eliza worked this classic Portland, ME sampler at Rachel Hall Neal's School. The bold lettering, flowering vine
border, and solidly stitched townscape at the bottom are characteristic of the school.
The three story mansion in the center could represent a few different grand houses that populated Portland at the
time. We know it is not Eliza's home, because she lived at 207 Cumberland Ave. in a very grand two story house
that her father, Edward Capen, had built in 1802, a year before he married her mother Betsy Bradish.
Eliza, born in 1804, was the oldest of their six children and had five younger siblings at age 12 when she worked
this sampler. At age 21 she married Charles Tibbetts and apparently they had no children.
Silk on linen; 25" x 20" framed, 21" x 16" sight.
