Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Roxbury, NH needlework sampler - Stephen & Carol Huber

Lois Mason Buckminster
Needlework Sampler
Roxbury, Cheshire, NH c. 1829

A three-sided meandering flowering vine border and a sawtooth border frames a classic sampler with alphabets, numerals, and a flowering bush at the bottom. It is inscribed: Lois M. Buckminster ---- A. (She probably started to write the word "Age" but ran out of room).

Lois (1819-1871) was the third oldest child born to Peter Davis Buckminster (1787-1863) and Abigail White (1790-1875). Peter was a farmer and married Abigail in 1815.

Lois married Asa O. Colby who was a joiner and they moved to Holyoke, MA and had one child, Abba Colby b. 1847.

Silk on linen; 19" x 18 ¼" framed.
