This rare classic sampler from Newbury, Massachusetts is inscribed: Sarah Toppan Born May 16 1748 This Sampler
I did/ The Year 1756 Trust in God at all Times.
The lush apple tree, flying birds and butterflies, and antlered deer on a grassy ground along with the three-sided
border design are indicative of Newbury, MA samplers.
Sarah was one of eleven children born to Edward Toppan and Sarah Bailey. At age 8 she worked this sampler and at
age 21 she married Col. Josiah Little (son to Brig. General Moses Little III), and they had ten children. She died
at age 75 in 1823 and is buried in Newburyport, MA.
Note: This sampler was featured in The Magazine Antiques - September 1978 and was in the Museum of American Folk
Art exhibition in 1978. It is listed in American Samplers by Bolton & Coe and illustrated in Girlhood Embroidery
by Betty Ring page 115.
