Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

1798 Antique sampler by Pickard, Rowley, MA from Huber

Hannah Pickard
Needlework Sampler
Rowley, Essex, MA dated 1798

Inscribed: Hannah Pickard Born November 5th 1788 Worked this Sampler 1798

Hannah, at age 10, lived just north of Boston when she worked this 18th century American sampler. It has a three-sided border and a solidly stitched bottom section. She is giving us a little reminder to not procrastinate (Life is wasting. Death is hasting.)

She was born to Joshua Pickard and his second wife Susannah Northend. Complete genealogy information accompanies this sampler.

The condition is excellent except for a very few missing black stitches in the inscription.

Silk on linen; 18" x 14" framed.
