Philipine inscribed her sampler: Philipine M. Howell Her Work/ Done in The 14 Year of her Age 1814/ Daughter
to Benjamin & Rachel Howell, and she included a verse: Hosanna to the prince of grace/ Sion behold thy king/
Proclaim the son of davids race/ And teach the babes to sing.
Between the inscriptions is a folksy homestead vignette with a house with hand pump, fence and a layered lawn with
animals, birds, and seven dressed standing figures of children and adults. The alphabets, inscriptions, and vignette
are surrounded with a four-sided saw-tooth and flowering vine border.
Phlipine Miller Howell (1800-1876) was the daughter of Benjamin & Rachel (Miller) Howell, (Members of old Emmanuel
Episcopal Church, New Castle, DE. She married 1st in 1819 in Phil, Isaac Brown (1787-1853) of Christiana Hundred,
Del. & Philadelphia, and 2nd in 1868 in Phil. , The Reverend Christian Frederick Steinman (1801- 1886), Methodist
clergyman.
