Anna Mary Heriges (Herriges)
Needlework Sampler
Philadelphia 1826
Needlework sampler Inscribed: "Anna Mary Heriges Daughter of John Joseph and Elizabeth Menges Age 7 years".
Anna attached two locks of her light blond hair, tied with cloth ribbons, to her sampler. Anna was born in 1819.
Her family had a tobacco shop and owned several buildings on Lombard Street in Philadelphia.
Included with this sampler is a folder with genealogical information and a fascinating story of how her father
slowly lost his mind and was eventually confined for years to a locked room upstairs in his house, suffering the
effects of deteriorating health and care. At that point, her mother and brother were in charge of the business
and the father care. The authorities were eventually called in by a neighbor, which sparked arrests and a neighborhood
riot.
Silk on linen; 18 x 18.75 inches framed, 15.75 x 16.5 sight.
Condition: Professionally framed. Some small holes scattered about, one long (3") separation at center left.
This sampler is accompanied by genealogical information for the Heriges family.
