Caroline worked this charming memorial as a young teenager while attending school in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
It retains its original frame, eglomise glass inscribed "C. HAVEN", and the original decorative wallpaper
on the back of the frame.
Caroline was born in 1795, the oldest of 10 children born to Henry Haven and Emma Cullum of Portsmouth, NH. In
1797, when she was just 2 years old, her 11 month old baby sister died. Probably c.1808, when she was in her early
teens, she worked this memorial to her long deceased sister. The monument is inscribed "In memory/ of/ Emma
Haven who depar/ted this life June/ 21 1797".
Silk and watercolor on silk; 15 ¾ x 14 ¾ inches framed.
