MARY SOUTHWARD Mary’s lively sampler relates to several that were worked in the Lynn and Salem areas. They are usually embroidered
on green linsey-woolsey and stitched with an unusual cursive O. Lively floral borders and baskets of flowers and
saw-tooth borders are also characteristics. Mary inscribed her sampler, Mary Southward’s sampler/ wrought in the
12 year of her/ age Salem October 2 AD 1807.
