Eliza Ann Prouty
Antique needlework sampler dated 1820
North central, PA (Burlington Township)
Eliza, at age 10, worked this large beautiful sampler with a ribbon border and three-story, center-hall house bracketed
with trees, birds, lawn, and flowering baskets. At the top are three alphabets, numerals, and a verse which doubtfully
hopes that this fragile sampler with its "party coloured threads" will survive to remind us that "once
I (she) lived". Well, Eliza, because you made such a beautiful sampler we mortals are still aware of the
fact that you lived, and it's about two hundred years later. The sampler is surrounded with a flowering vine,
a saw tooth border, and a silk ribbon.
Note: Genealogical research on Eliza is inconclusive, but an almost identical sampler (from the same school) was
worked by 13 year old Sarah Ann Prouty in 1822, possibly Eliza's sister. Sarah lived in Bradford, West Burlington
Township, PA. Sarah parents were Elijah Prouty and Elizabeth Ellsworth (her 2nd of 3 marriages).

Silk on linen; 24 ¾" x 22 ¾" sight.
