Mary at age 8 (in the ninth year) worked this graphically dynamic sampler with silk thread on a green linsey-woolsey background.. It consists of numerous alphabets, numerals, an inscription: MARY N SOUTHWICK her Sampler/ wrought in the ninth year of her age aug/ ust 22 1819, and a poem: Each pleasing art lends softness to/ our minds and by our studies are our/ lives refine Danvers September 8. A highly developed flowering vine border emanate from a basket at the bottom and surrounds the sampler. It is in excellent condition and retains strong colors, 19 ½" x 16 ¾" framed.

Mary Newell Southwick (1811-1887) of Danvers, MA was oldest of three girls and two boys born to George Southwick and Mary Harding Lakeman Ham. She married David L. Neal (1808-1844), moved to Concord, NH, and they had four children.
