Elizabeth C. Smith
Needlework Sampler
PA, or NJ c.1825
Needlework sampler/picture wrought by Elizabeth C. Smith. Probably PA or NJ circa 1825. The sampler depicts
a large basket of harvest fruit and vegetables, and a shepherdess under a tree with her dog and several sheep and
goats on a green lawn. A pair of doves and butterflies, top center, flanks a four line moral maxim. An accompanying
folder includes relevant information about Elizabeth Smith and this sampler.
Condition: Professionally framed, excellent condition. The sheep are missing some white long stitches on their
coats, which may be intentional, note, the goats are not. At one point the sampler had been tacked to a frame or
stretcher. Those holes are visible along the bottom edge.
Silk on linen; 21.5 x 19.5 inches framed, 19.75 x 17.35 sight.
