This decorative, charming sampler may have been worked by a student at Sarah Stivours School in Salem, MA. The
long floating stitches are typical of other samplers from that school. Framed in a bold three-sided flowering vine
border between geometric bands are alphabets, an initialed inscription: L D, and a excerpt from a Isaac
Watts hymn: MY SOUL COME MEDITATe/ THE DAYS AND THINK HO/ W NEAR IT STA(N)DS WHEN/ THOU MUST QUIT THIS/ HOUSE
OF CLAY AND FLy/ TO UNKNOWN LANDS. Depicted at the bottom, in a folksy vignette, is a standing couple, bird,
a goose, a flying insect, and two friendly four legged animals.
