Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

needlework sampler by Eliza Colyer from Huber

Eliza Colyer
Needlework Sampler
English c.1800

Inscribed: Eliza Colyer/ In Her 12 Year.

This small, charming, lavishly embroidered sampler is profuse with motifs featuring a girl at the top between two giant dogs and a house centered at the bottom. Eliza also included the complete rendition of the most popular verse found on samplers, Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand, As the first efforts of an infant hand - etc.

The sampler is in almost perfect condition, no little holes, no missing stitches, and good color. There is some very slight darkening in the area of her inscription.
