Silk embroidered memorial by Betsy Ward Memorial silk embroideries were extremely popular in the early 1800s after the death of George Washington in
1799. They were beautiful art forms intended to honor loved ones that had passed away. This elegant example depicts
a large central figure, probably Betsey at aged fourteen, placing a garland around a monument to family members
(note the initials SW, MW). The incredible workmanship exhibited in this piece is evident in the fact that the
background silk is almost completely covered with stitching and the face and hair are professionally drawn and
painted. STEPHEN & CAROL HUBER |
