LUCY S. WYMAN
Charlestown, MA, 1809
Silk embroidery
In 1809 Lucy Stearns Wyman wrought this beautifully executed silk embroidered picture depicting the very
popular 1788 French novel entitled "Paul and Virginia", probably under the tutelage of Miss Hannah Spofford
who taught in Charlestown from 1806 to 1811. This needlework picture is based on the same story as the film
"The Blue Lagoon" a 1980 American romance and adventure film directed by Randal Kleiser. Lucy (1794-1834)
was the fifth of eleven children born to Nehemiah Wyman and Susanna Stearns. She married Richard Rowland
in 1820.
