SUSAN TROWBRIDGE
Connecticut c.1820
Susan worked this beautiful silk embroidered Coat of Arms probably in her mid to late teens while attending school
most likely in Hartford or Litchfield Connecticut. It is elegantly designed incorporating delicate flowering vines
with bowknots at the top and near the corners. The central shield is stitched using silk and metallic thread and
painted with watercolor. The banner is inscribed BY THE NAME OF TROWBRIDGE and on the glass SUSAN TROWBRIDGE. Allowing
much of the background silk to remain unembroidered, combined with the original eglomise glass and gold leaf frame,
add to its graphic appeal.
Silk, metallic thread, and watercolor on silk; 32 1/4" x 24" framed.
