LIBERTY
Attributed to Sarah Wheeler
Abby Wright School
Hadley, Massachusetts c.1810
Liberty is depicted in this silk embroidery as a young woman with ringlets, wearing a classical gown holding
a cornucopia spilling over with fruits, and a pole topped with a liberty cap. There are only five known surviving
silk embroideries depicting liberty from the Abby Wright School in Hadley, Massachusetts.
This needlework picture was part of the furnishings of the Hancock Inn in Hancock, New Hampshire, which was built
in 1789 by Noah Wheeler. Wheeler’s daughter, Sarah, was born that same year and was of an appropriate age to have
attended school at Abby Wright’s establishment.
Sarah married Jedidiah Fox, who later assumed control and management of the inn.
Silk, watercolor, and spangles on silk; 19” x 16 ½” framed.
