ANGEL GABRIEL by R. Rayner American c.1820 This folksy silk embroidered depiction of the angel Gabriel standing on a triangle of grass between two trees with the sun shining over his head is charmingly naive. It is signed in the lower right “R. Ryner” Gabriel is considered an archangel or a messenger sent directly from god. In Christian and Jewish tradition, he appeared to Mary, Zacharias, and Daniel, and in Islamic tradition, he revealed the Koran to Muhammad. Silk on silk; 14 7/8” x 13 1/4” framed.
