Deming family antique silk embroidered Coat of Arms, Hartford, CT
Virtue alone Ennobles
This is an exquisitely embroidered coat of arms with the family crest and motto "Virtue
alone Ennobles" of the Deming family from Hartford, CT circa 1820. The raised and padded gold and silver metallic
thread used in the stitching of the family crest are examples of the finest traditions in schoolgirl needlework
of the period.
It was wrought at the Misses Pattens' School in Hartford displaying a combination of characterisics unique to the
school. The raised silver metallic eagle at top center supporting a garland of flowers along with the flowering
vine at the bottom are design motifs that are indicative of this school.
Silk and metallic thread on silk; 17 2/2 x 12 3/4 inches sight, 20 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches framed.
