
Maria (Mary) Blakiston

At age 12 Mary worked this rare 18th century Philadelphia silk embroidery. It was no doubt copied from a published
print. By 1793 in Philadelphia creating scenic embroideries had long been fashionable.
At age 10 Mary worked an interesting Philadelphia sampler (picture accompanies the embroidery). Her parents were
Sarah Warnock and Presley Blakiston who was a successful shoe and boot importer and a city commissioner.
Mary married John O’Neal, owner of a brickyard who also had large holdings of real estate. They had four children
and Mary died in 1823. John than married Mary’s sister, Rebecca.
Silk and paint on silk; 22 ¼” x 25 ¼” sight.
