Maria Koogle
Silk embroidered picture
Lebanon, Ohio c.1817
This stunning silk embroidered picture depicts two adult and three younger female figures all elegantly dressed
standing in a fabric draped gazebo with an opulent estate in the background.
According to genealogical research, Maria Koogle was the daughter of Adam Koogle and Mary Wolf. She was born in
1803 in Pennsylvania, moved to Lebanon, OH in her early teens, at age 23 married Pomeroy Stoddard, and died in
1893 in Ohio. Information on the original cardboard backing and the frame indicate that she worked this magnificent
embroidery at age 14, and the progression of ownership as it descended through the Stoddard family to the present
time.
