AMERICA Silk Embroidery
by Hannah P. Cogswell
Atkinson, New Hampshire c.1811
America is represented in this beautifully stitched silk embroidery as the Goddess of Liberty holding the an
olive branch in one hand (symbolizing peace) and a liberty cap and American flag in the other (symbolizing liberty).
She is elegantly dressed standing in a stitched pastoral setting with painted sky. The charming reversed painted
glass is early and may be original, but possibly replaces a more formal eglomise glass.
According to a note on the back, Hannah worked this in 1811 or 1812 while attending Atkinson Academy in New Hampshire,
Hannah P. Badger was her married name.
Note: Hannah (1791-1869) was born in Atkinson, NH, and in 1814 married William Badger who became Governer of NH.
They had two children. Atkinson Academy is now an elementary school, housed in the original 1803 building.
Silk and watercolor on silk; 13" x 12 1/4" with original frame.
