SUSANNA WEEDON
English antique needlework band sampler dated 1662
Susanna Weedon 1662
Band samplers were created to record patterns and kept in the work basket as a reference. Susanna stitched an elaborate
rendition of difficult patterns and included a band with "boxers". These boys are often found on English
band samplers, either dressed or simply outlined. They are most likely based on an Italian design shown in Ostau's
book of 1561, Le Vera Perfettione del Designo. She ended with bands of whitework which included her name and date.
Silk on linen; 18" x 6 ¾".
