This rare North Carolina sampler is beautifully stitched, well designed, and in wonderful condition. It is inscribed; Mary. L. Speaight./ Aged. 12. Years./ 1832. She also included a verse from the “Universal Prayer” by Alexander Pope.

If I am right, thy grace impart,
    Still in the right to stay;
If I am wrong, oh teach my heart
    To find a better way


Mary was born in 1820 (father Jeremiah) in Perquimans County, NC (north eastern shore, on Albemarle Sound). Her first marriage at age 23 was to Samuel Trueblood (b.1816- ) and had two children Ellen Levine (1844 - ) and Samuel Jr. (1845-1833) who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War.  At age 31 she married George Berryman.
