MARY SOUTHWARD
Salem, MA antique needlework sampler dated 1807

Mary’s lively sampler relates to several that were worked in the Lynn and Salem areas. They are usually embroidered on green linsey-woolsey and stitched with an unusual cursive O. Lively floral borders and baskets of flowers and saw-tooth borders are also characteristics. Mary inscribed her sampler, Mary Southward’s sampler/ wrought in the 12 year of her/ age Salem October 2 AD 1807.

Mary married Edmund Upton April 24, 1822 in Salem. He died in 1825 in Matanzas and in 1832 she married Englishman Captain William Summers.

Silk on green linsey-woolsey; 21 ½” x 15 ½”.
