Antique sampler by MARIA MORTON
Plymouth, MA dated 1820
Maria was born in 1806, one of Ichabod Morton and Sarah Churchill's eight children. She married William Churchill
and they had one child William M. Churchill. Maria's sampler is more lavishly developed than most Plymouth samplers
but shares classic characteristics with others from this easily identifiable group. Note the flowering vine motifs
enclosing the rounded corner rectangle containing ligatures, six alphabets, a verse about religion, and a stitched
and painted scene with memorial monuments.
Silk and paint on linen; 17 x 12 ½ inches unframed.
