antique Dresden needlework sampler
This most amazing and ambitious Dresden work sampler comprised of minute and difficult stitches is the best
known example known of this type of work. The lower square, second from the right, is inscribed with the names
of the parents and the maker, Joseph Marriott, Mary Marriott, Sarah Marriott, Work 1762.
Sarah born circa 1750, was the daughter of Joseph Marriott (c.1720-?) and Mary Smith (1721-1752) who married in
1745. Joseph was a prominent leader in the community and had a house on Walnut Street. The sampler descended in
the distinguished Canby and Logan families.
The sampler is presented in the original shadow-box frame.
