Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Baltimore, MD 1831 sampler - Huber

Sarah Kelsall
Antique Needlework Sampler
Baltimore, MD dated 1831

We brilliantly deduced that this sampler inscribed: Sarah Kelsall Her work Baltimore/ March 5 1831, is from Baltimore. Genealogical research indicates that Sarah was nine years old when she stitched this graphic pleasing house sampler.

Sarah (1822-1907) was born in Baltimore, MD the first child of George Kelsall from Cheshire England and Elizabeth Rundle also from England. She was born 3 month early, hmmm! Her family moved to Virginia in her mid-teens and at age 20 she married Harvey Ray in Wheeling (Ohio, Virginia ?). They move to Iowa where they raised their five children.

Silk on linen; 19 ¼" x 18 ¼" framed.
