
Antique needlework sampler by Phebe Ann House
Lancaster County, PA dated 1825
Inscribed: To be good is to be happy.
Graphic, folky, and charming. At aged twelve Phebe completed this icon of American samplers, under the instruction
of thirty-six year old Columbia, PA. school mistress Sarah McCardell.
Phebe, daughter of John House, a Quaker, and Esther Staman, married Benjamin Taylor Davis in 1836, they had three
daughters and in 1848 she married Joseph Lamborn.
Silk, wool, and spangles on linen with a spangled ribbon border; 21 1/4 " x 24" sight.
