Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

sampler from Huber by Jane Hammell

JANE HAMMELL, Burlington County, NJ, dated 1829

Jane, aged 9, stitched one of the most exciting samplers worked in Burlington County. Her twin sister Elizabeth, made an almost identical piece the same year. They both feature a spread eagle over a center hall house with vivid flowers, parrots in cages, birds perched on trees, people and animals. Jane enhanced her sampler with an uplifting verse from an Isaac Watts hymn.

Jane and Elizabeth, born in 1820, were two of fourteen children born to John Hammell and his second wife Keturah Leeds. They lived on a farm in Mansfield Township, Burlington County, NJ. Neither of the girls married and were listed as school teachers in the 1870 census.

Silk on linen; 17 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches sight.
