Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Newport sampler from Huber by Hadwen

Elizabeth Hadwen
Newport, RI 1766

This classic early Newport, RI sampler is worked in a band format closely resembling samplers from Boston of the same period. It is inscribed: Elizabeth Hadwen Her Sampler Made/ In The 12 Year of Her Age 1766. It is further inscribed with verses about young women being an honor to their parents and the duties of marriage. The well known whaling merchant and silver retailer William Hadwen of Nantucket was her nephew.

Elizabeth was born in Newport, RI, Feb 18, 1755, to John Hadwen (1722-?) and Elizabeth Barney (1731-1810). She married George Arnold (1751-1804) and they had 10 children. She died in Troy, NY 1839.
