Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

NJ sampler - Huber

Hetty Rosalia Gruet
Essex County, NJ c.1826

Hetty worked this impressive patriotic house sampler featuring an American eagle grasping two American flags. The other motifs consist of birds, butterflies, and baskets of flowers all surrounded with a flowering vine border. It is inscribed: Hetty Rosalla Gruet s Work Aged 12 Years. AD. She likely removed the date in later life, for many women disliked such conspicuous evidence of their age.

Hetty Rosalia Gruet was born in 1818, the daughter of Frederick Gruet and Jane Ball, in North Farms, Essex County,
New Jersey, now Maplewood. She married James Drake April 4, 1845 in Newark, New Jersey.
