Mary born Nov. 26, 1823 embroidered this large graphic sampler with stylized peacocks, birds, dog, butterfly and a central vase of flowers. She included initials representing herself (MHG) and family members, and a verse touting the pleasure, comfort, and joy derived of religion.

Mary’s parents were William Garrison (WG) (1793-1883) and Deborah Hand (DG) (1798-1884). Their children were Melissa (MG), *Mary (MHG), Elizabeth (EAG), William (WFG). She married John W. Swain 1 Dec. 1841 and they had a son Humphrey Swain abt. 1843. Note: The initials ending in (T) may be associated with Mary’s maternal grandparents.
