This rare American sampler identifies the makers name, age, date, town, and school.
Inscribed: Wrought by Eliza W Gale At M Tuft's School/ Charlestown 1813 Ae 12 yrs.
Eliza stitched an ambitious verse encouraging young women to achieve their "chief enjoyment" through
"regular employment." The wide arcaded border is typical of Boston area samplers.
Eliza was born in Salem, MA in c.1802 to Samuel Gale, who was 18 years old, and his wife Mary.
Silk on linen; 21 ¾" x 18 ½" framed.
