Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Haverhill, MA sampler from Huber

Hannah Chase
Antique needlework sampler
Haverhill, MA 1794

Hannah worked this very colorful sampler at age 14 while attending school in Haverhill, MA. The three sided geometric border inside the flowering vines combined with the hexagon bottom border (now referred to as the “Boston band”) are classic characteristics of Haverhill samplers. This rare early example has a vertical format. She included the well known verse "This needle work of/ Mine doth tell when/ A child I learned well/ By my Parents I was taught/ Not to spend my time for/ naught."

Hannah was probably the daughter of Joseph Chase and Judith Cooper.

Silk on linen; 19 ½” x 17 ½” framed.
