Sarah Jane Brown
Massachusetts c.1810 Sarah stitched this graphic sampler depicting a church flanked by trees including a weeping
figure and a monument which appears to be inscribed to someone who died at age 62? (It is difficult to read). The
church and yard are solidly stitched and the sampler is further enhanced with flowering vines, alphabets, and numbers
all surrounded with a saw tooth border. The uncluttered design and the use of unbleached linen add to its graphic
appeal. Accompanying the sampler is a portrait of Sarah as a young woman.
Inscribed: Sarah Jane Brown Aged 8. years. The verse reads, In books or working we'll/ Let my first years be
past/ That I may give for every day/ Some good account at last.
Silk on linen: 16 3/4" x 17 1/4" sight.
$12,500 (for sampler and portrait)
