Rachel Boughten
Mary Zeller's School
Antique needlework sampler
Philadelphia, PA dated 1807
Rachel, probably in her pre-teens, worked this delightful sampler at Mary Zeller's School in Philadelphia. The
school mistress influenced the overall design and choice of motifs while allowing the young students some creativity
in the composition. This sampler exemplifies the characteristics of other samplers from the Mary Zeller's School.
Grounded with traditional motifs and symmetry while being enriched with randomly placed folksy motifs, the girl
at the well, the milking cow, and various animals and insects, makes this sampler unique even within the other
known Zeller School samplers.
Silk on linen; 12" x 20 ½" sight.
