Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Decorative Black Folk Art from HUBER

Decorative Black Folk Art
Woolwork Picture
Dated 1878

This highly graphic needlework picture is loaded with a variety of motifs copied from women's magazines like Godey's Lady's Book and others. The nicely dressed black figures, the unsavory man at the top, the American flag at the top with 24 stars, the word "AVON", the English flag at the bottom, etc. probably have a common theme about the joy of being free from oppression.

It has a (loose) Connecticut provenance, and there is an AVON, CT but that may be coincidental.

Wool on linen; 22” x 22” unframed.
