Anonymous Sampler
New England c.1820
This is a charming and interesting sampler features a central boating scene apparently at the mouth of a cove
or river. The arched columns, oval framed scenes, and solidly stitched checkered board bottom panel combine to
make this a highly developed pleasing schoolgirl sampler.
The maker did not sign or date it and its overall design is unique. Similar design elements and stitching techniques
can be found on samplers along the coastline from Rhode Island to Maine, but most likely this is from the Boston
area..
Silk on linen; 14 ½" x 11 ½" sight. Period gold 2 ½" frame is probably not
original.
