Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Sussex. England sampler - Huber

Jane Ann Wickens
Antique Needlework Sampler
Sussex, England dated 1841

Inscribed: Jane Ann Wickens Completed this work November 8th 1841 in her 11 yr.

This sampler is profuse with butterflies, birds, animals, and various flowering tree motifs. At the top are two alphabets, numerals, and a verse that should inspire us all to get off our duffs and enjoy life.

Jane's father (Isaac Wickens), was a farmer with 220 acres and employed eight men. He had three children with his first wife (Ann Deacon), and no children with his second wife (Anna Dine), she was too innocuous but soothing to be around. Jane's mother was Issac's third wife (Eliza Martin), she was no anodyne, so they had eight more children.

Silk on linen: 16" x 16 ½" framed.
