Sarah Jewett
Needlework Sampler
Newbury, MA dated 1761
Inscribed: Sarah Jewett Born November 6 1745 This Sampler I Wrought The Year 1761 and Goodness and
mercy ever follow who shape their conduct by god's holy laws.
Sarah's early Newbury sampler exhibits various carry-over designs from the 17th century such as the carnations
and large floral bands. The leaping deer being chased by a spotted dog are found on early Boston samplers as well
as the trefoil band and border. The large free-style basket of flowers and fruit trees, and the three-sided border
with the dominate vignette at the bottom are Newbury designs characteristics that prevail in later Newbury and
Newburyport samplers.
Silk on linen: 22 ½" x 17 ¼" sight, 26" x 20 ½" with original frame.
