Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Needlework SAmpler from York ME - Huber

York, ME sampler - Stephen & Carol Huber

Christiana Heard
Needlework Sampler
Sanford, York, ME c. 1818

Christiana worked this c. 1818 sampler as a young girl living in Sanford, York, Maine, which is a small town in southwest Maine near the New Hampshire border. The top band has a centered flowering basket with mirror image long stemmed flowers flowing to the sides ending at the corners with two beautiful standing birds facing in. The center is comprised of numerals and several alphabets, and an inscription: Christiana Heard born May 9/ 1809. Centered at the bottom is a stylized carnation, (which interestingly is the same carnation that appears on several Newburyport, MA samplers), and mirror images of birds, flowering vines, and flowering baskets.

Christiana Heard (1809-1822) was the third youngest of nine children born to Jacob Heard (1771-1804) and Sarah "Sally" Hill (1774-1801) of Sanford, York, ME.

Silk on linen; 20" x 19 ½" framed.

$5,400
