This sampler Initialed ASF and dated 1766 includes some motifs that came originally from 17th century pattern
books. In the upper right corner is a fully developed Latin cross scene topped with the initials INRI, latin for
lesus Nazareneus Rex ludaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews) along with several other symbolic motifs.
A charming couple appear near an armchair and a deer with large antlers that symbolizes the wisdom of God. The
many branches and sprigs of flowers are intricately worked in an appealing array of colors and stitches, capture
ones attention. Some of these are worked in free form manner while the two stylized motifs that appear in the
corners are inspired by century earlier designs attributed to Rosina Helena Furst's book "Alle Mein Blumen".
The sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted in a 19th century gold leaf frame.
