RARE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, CATY FIELD'S, MARY BALCH'S SCHOOL,
PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, DATED 1789
Worked in silk on Linen; inscribed (faintly) Caty Fields work Providence 1789.

Height 16 1/4 in. by width 10 1/4 in.

CATALOGUE NOTE
This rather plain sampler by a seven-year-old is nonetheless a recognizable example from Mary Balch's school. Catherine (Caty) Field (c. 1782 - 1875) was the daughter of Lemuel Field (1750- 1836)and Rachel Downing (d. 1814) of Providence. She married merchant and paper hanger William James (c. 1778-1824) on November 19, 1810. Catherine was one of six children. Her father Lemuel owned real estate in Providence.
