CATALOGUE NOTE
This rather plain sampler by a seven-year-old is nonetheless a recognizable example from Mary Balch's school. Catherine
(Caty) Field (c. 1782 - 1875) was the daughter of Lemuel Field (1750- 1836)and Rachel Downing (d. 1814) of Providence.
She married merchant and paper hanger William James (c. 1778-1824) on November 19, 1810. Catherine was one of six
children. Her father Lemuel owned real estate in Providence. (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen
