Cavalier, Flowers, & Ladies
This lavishly developed needlework picture features a gigantic vase of flowers flanked by a macho cavalier wearing
impressive spurs and sporting a two handed sword, and an elegantly dressed lady holding a flower. The inclusion
of the other three ladies may provide a key to unlocking the overall theme of the picture. The monkey, lions, rabbit,
stag, insects, birds, and estate in the lower left are typical motifs found on other 17th century needlework.
