Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Cavalier stumpwork from Huber

Cavalier, Flowers, & Ladies
England mid-17th century
Needlework picture

This lavishly developed needlework picture features a gigantic vase of flowers flanked by a macho cavalier wearing impressive spurs and sporting a two handed sword, and an elegantly dressed lady holding a flower. The inclusion of the other three ladies may provide a key to unlocking the overall theme of the picture. The monkey, lions, rabbit, stag, insects, birds, and estate in the lower left are typical motifs found on other 17th century needlework.

This may be a depiction of the writings of one of the early 17th century cavalier poets that were loyal to King Charles I and celebrated living life to its fullest with a lusty appreciation of women while exhibiting a sensitive enjoyment of the gentle beauty of nature.

Silk, metallic threads, and sequins on silk; 22 ¾” x 27 ¼ “ framed.
