MARY WELLES Hartford, CT 1804 Silk Embroidered Memorial Mary Welles also stitch a silk embroidered picture of Mount Vernon. (link) Mary Welles stitched two silk embroidered pictures. This one is this memorial to her father Roger Welles and her sister Sarah Welles and was most likely stitched at the Misses Pattens’ school in Hartford, CT. The other is a depiction of Mount Vernon, based on the Frances Jukes engraving, and may have been made at the Misses Pattens’ school in Hartford, CT or possibly at Deerfield, MA where other almost identical pictures of Mount Vernon were worked. Mary was the daughter of General Roger Welles (1753-1795) of Wethersfield, and Jemima Kellogg (1757-1829) of Newington, CT. In the memorial to her father, she stitched an image of herself in front of the monument and her mother and sister to the side with her two brothers in the back. Roger Welles served with Lafayette at the battle of Yorktown where he received a bayonet would to his leg and after the war was named a General. Mary married Martin Kellogg (1781-1868) in 1808 and they had seven children. Both are stitched with silk threads with paint and ink on silk.
